Since arriving in Tenerife nearly seven years ago olddogsnewtricks have worked extremely hard and are now well established working 5 nights per week in cabaret bars and hotels. The majority of the venues are at the smarter end of the island favoured by the wealthier tourists who come several times per year. Many of them come to see their energy packed show every night of their holiday and have become good friends. On each visit they are eagerly looking for new CD’s. The duo have now produced 7 CD’s which sell extremely well both at the shows and over the internet.

As an act they are regularly told that they are by far the best on the island and are asked why they are performing in Tenerife and not in large venues, clubs or cruise ships. The answer to date has been that they gave up the pressures of "living out of a suitcase" when they made the decision to move to Tenerife. However the flames of ambition are always stirring and it is possible that if the right opportunity came up they would give it serious consideration.

The duo/band have an extremely extensive repertoire numbering around 230 songs. They take a lot of time and have invested a lot of money to ensure that they get their individual sound to each track - Jill’s voice & harmonies plus Bob’s harmonies and guitar playing. guitar playing. This is now aided and enhanced by Graham on drums adding even more energy and dynamism to their live performances. All OD-NT CD´s and backing tracks are recorded by Roger Dawson of Silent Coast Productions, Tenerife. Roger is their highly skilled recording and sound engineer who adds drums, bass, keyboards and synthesizer where necessary. Feel free to contact Roger should you require backing tracks, CD’s, Videos or DVD’s on 00 34 699 105 554.

You can download some samples of their most recent work (also some new pictures).

They are now well settled in Tenerife and have manged to acquire themselves four dogs and three cats, all of which they have rescued. Guess where the money from the CD sales goes – vet bills, food etc. but hey it’s only money.

More details about Old Dogs New Tricks

Jill - vocals and acoustic guitar

After spending her formative years treading the boards in theatres around the UK and the States, singing in musicals by Rogers & Hammerstein and Cole Porter, Jill moved into the real world of earning a living Corporate style. Some years later, and still with stars in her eyes, she met Bob and was launched into the world of rock music. Her early classical training (3 years at Guildhall in London studying music and drama) and her preference for diet coke has earned Jill the nickname of "the Julie Andrews of rock". However 5 years of rocking the stages of smoky pubs and clubs have changed her voice from a sweet singing soprano into a raunchy baritone. Recent reviews of the band describe Jill as "a spunky female vocalist who adds a sense of fun and style to the songs they cover". Universally loved by all, she is the pillar of the band's public relations effort. During breaks and at the end of gigs she can always be found chatting up the crowd. (While Bob is left to pack up the kit.) Occasionally she can even be persuaded to sing the correct lyrics at the appropriate time - but no guarantees. Jill's other claim to fame is that she thought up the name for the band. In retrospect, a terrible choice that has come back to haunt her - think about it.

Bob "Boogie"– guitar (electric & acoustic) and vocals

At an age when most sensible people are starting to contemplate retirement, Bob had a dream – he wanted to be a rock star. Aided and abetted by two great mates - bass player, the late Eddie Quinn – ex of Mungo Jerry and lead guitarist and general rock tart Keith Rosetti, he took faltering steps onto the stage with the Rosettis, a well-known local Blues/R&B band based in Surrey. (Bob claims to have known four chords by this time.) Nine months later he formed his own band - olddogsnewtricks. Over the next 5 years they took the south of England by storm playing classic rock and R&B in pubs, clubs and marquees. Due to encouragement and coaching from Jill he has even been known to sing a few numbers in tune.

Bob & Jill decided after much research and heart searching to completely change their life style and location. They made the tough decision to give up corporate life, company politics, commuting and the English weather and moved to sunny Tenerife. That was pretty easy. The toughest decision was having to leave the rest of the band behind (and even tougher the groupies!). However, in the interests of the tourists they have forced themselves to put up with the sunshine (around 360 days per year) and warmth (min 12 C - max 85C). It's a tough life!.

Graham Bennet - DrummerGraham - Drums and percussion

Graham started his playing career by joining a marching band at the age of 13. Having learned to play the snare drum he quickly acquired the taste for a full drum kit (meant less walking) and started playing in school and local bands with mates who were also budding musicians.
His professional career meant travelling extensively so playing took a back seat for some years, although he played as a guest with bands whenever he could. On moving to Tenerife he made it a goal to rekindle the passion and bought himself a new kit and started practising his paradiddles and drum fills once again
During a recent upgrade to the OD-NT kennels they had a new kitchen fitted on their rooftop terrace. This was done by "Kitchens By Design" managed and run by Graham. A chance conversation with Bob and Jill saw him "jamming" in with them in March this year and as they say, the rest is history.
The arrangement was so successful that Graham has now joined the band on a part time basis (he would love to go full time but he has a business to run). During the last 6 months a strong bond has been formed by the trio and they are now actively looking for larger venues that can afford to support a 3 piece band.

"Entertaining the audience and ensuring they have a great time during the show makes all the practice and hard work worthwhile"

Graham and the band is also strongly supported by Sandra (Graham's wife) who now organizes mini buses for the groups followers to get to shows and looks like she could be coerced into becoming the "Fan Club Secretary". (sorry Sandra)
He looks forward to his future with the band, and is passionate about its success here in Tenerife.
